All-Wheel Drive Capability of the 2020 Sonata
While the 2020 Hyundai Sonata is not an SUV, many consumers find themselves wondering if it can be had with power in all four of its wheels. After all, other midsize sedans like the Subaru Legacy and Nissan Altima do feature the option of all-wheel drive. Does the 2020 Hyundai Sonata have AWD?
No, the 2020 Hyundai Sonata does not offer all-wheel drive. Instead, it comes with front-wheel drive on every trim level. That being said, this vehicle is still quite a performer; it can produce up to 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque with its standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Stepping up to the optional 1.6-liter four-cylinder drops that hp to 180 but raises the torque to 195 pound-feet.
Overall, though, the 2020 Sonata focuses on comfort over athleticism. The model has been fully redesigned and now features one of the nicest interiors in the class. It embodies the sultry “Sensuous Sportiness” design philosophy that Hyundai is now implementing across its brand.
Pre-Release Whispers of Sonata AWD
Before the 2020 Hyundai Sonata was released, there were rumors that the all-new model would have all-wheel drive. Jae Young Kim, the Hyundai director of product division, was asked about the possibility of an AWD Sonata in the U.S. His response?
“Yes… we are currently reviewing the need for all-wheel drive in [the US] market.”
For better or worse, the need must not have been determined to be great enough this time around.
Is all-wheel drive helpful for daily driving?
American drivers tend to value AWD because of a common perception that it is good for tackling variable road and weather conditions. While this is true, the feature is often not as useful as imagined. Snow tires, for example, are much more effective in slippery winter conditions than all-wheel drive.
All-wheel drive is handy for off-roading. However, off-roading is best done in an SUV or crossover with a high ride height. Not all consumers are into such high-flyers, which is why there continues to be such an enduring demand for midsize cars like the 2020 Hyundai Sonata.
